Gray, gone.
I built ihategray because I was tired of colorizers that watermark your memories or charge $72 a year to download them full-size. This one runs entirely on your device. Drop a black-and-white photo, get it back in color. That is the whole business model.
Your colorized photos
More from the ihate family
Also free, also runs entirely on your device: erase any photo's background in seconds. No signup, no watermark, full resolution.
See it work
A real result from ihategray, not a mockup — an actual black-and-white photograph, colorized on a device. Drag the handle.
How it works
Drop your photos
Up to 20 at a time. JPG, PNG, or WebP. Black-and-white originals work best. They stay in your browser the whole time.
The AI downloads once
About 220MB, one time. After that it lives in your browser and works offline. Your photos are colorized on your device, never sent anywhere.
Download your PNGs
Full resolution, no watermark. One by one, or all of them as a ZIP.
Do not take my word for it
Open DevTools, switch to the Network tab, and colorize a photo. You will see zero requests. That is the entire privacy policy: your images never leave this tab.
Why I built this
The best-known photo colorizer gives away a 500-pixel watermarked preview and charges $72 a year for the real thing. I wanted the opposite.
Full resolution, free
No account. No watermark. Nothing uploaded, ever. 20 photos per batch. Works offline after your first visit.
500 × 500, watermarked
That is their documented free download. Full resolution without the watermark costs $72 a year.
Palette.fm's free downloads are 500×500 pixels with a watermark; their annual plan is $72/year for full-resolution, watermark-free colorizations. Read the full comparison.
Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. No accounts, no watermarks, no resolution caps, no download limits. I will keep the tool itself free. If this gets big, I might sell one quiet sponsorship slot. The tool stays free.
How do I colorize black and white photos online for free?
Drop your black-and-white photo on this page. The AI colorizes it right in your browser, and you download the full-resolution result free — no watermark, no account, no upload.
Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?
No. The AI model downloads to your browser once (about 220MB), and from then on every photo is colorized on your device. Open your browser's DevTools, watch the Network tab while you colorize a photo: zero requests.
Why does the first visit take a while?
Your browser is downloading the AI model one time. It gets cached, so later visits are instant and the whole thing works offline.
What AI does it use?
An open-source image colorization model, running locally in your browser. No servers involved, no API calls, nothing to leak.
Which browsers work?
Any modern browser. Chrome and Edge are fastest. Safari and Firefox work too, just a bit slower.
Is this a palette.fm alternative?
It is the free one. Palette.fm's free downloads are 500×500 pixels with a watermark, and full resolution costs $72 a year. ihategray gives you full-resolution, watermark-free colorizations for free, on your own device.
Nothing here yet. One day, one company gets this spot.
I am in no hurry.
